The Explore Kentucky Initiative and the Powell County Public Library (PCPL) have collaborated to create an outdoor recreational festival as part of PCPL's summer reading program called " In My Backyard: Red River Gorge.
The premise of the event is to engage the general public to become involved with all the awesome outdoor recreational and nature watching opportunities that the Red River Gorge National Geological Area and surrounding area offers. Our hope is to inspire participants to become stewards of the environment, take ownership of the amazing landscape in their backyard, and to build self confidence through adventure just as the famed rock climber, Alex Honnold author of " Alone on the Wall " (one of PCPL's summer reading program books) has in his rock climbing journey over the past two decades.
We will have booths that feature dynamic and interactive activities that will appeal to individuals of all ages and give the local community a glimpse of what the gorge offers for interested explorers of all demographics: mountain biking, hiking, photography, rock climbing, nature watching, paddling, orienteering, etc., as well provide a call to action to protect the environment and see the outdoors as a way as engaging in a healthy lifestyle.
Participants will earn points towards cool prizes like a night in one of The Canopy Crew LLC's Treehouse, stickers, outdoor adventure gear, and more from each activity they complete.
